Hunting Warpack plus Houndpack Lance: The War Dog Army Nobody Can Confirm

Both War Dog detachments cost exactly a Strike Force budget together, and two official documents disagree about whether that is legal. Here is the evidence and what to build instead.

This is a warning page rather than a recommendation, and it is a warning of an unusual kind: we are not telling you the army is illegal. We are telling you that , and that the two official documents disagree.

Hunting Warpack costs 1 Detachment Point. Houndpack Lance costs 2. A Strike Force budget is roughly 3 DP. Both are War Dog detachments, and together they are the obvious army for a collection built around War Dogs.

The two documents, and exactly what each one says

The Faction Pack version 1.2, legal for matched play from 26 August 2026, prints two things on page 3. Above the HUNTING WARPACK heading it prints the banner UNIQUE: WAR DOGS. Inside that detachment's own rule it prints the sentence: this detachment has the WAR DOGS tag and cannot be taken with another WAR DOGS detachment.

The Munitorum Field Manual version 1.3, read 28 August 2026, lists no active unique tag on any Chaos Knights detachment at all. On the Hunting Warpack card it carries two annotation bands, UPDATED and UNIQUE TAG REMOVED. On the Houndpack Lance card it carries the same pair.

So the older document prints a tag and a restriction; the newer document records that a tag was removed and shows none active. Both are official Games Workshop documents.

Our stance, which is the programme's stance for this class of disagreement. We assert the tag, because the pack prints it in two places. We do not assert the restriction, because the newer official document appears to have removed the thing it depends on. We do not claim the pairing is illegal and we do not claim it is legal.

Why the mirror does not settle it, and why the geometry was checked

A community rules mirror keeps the pack's sentence. Its Hunting Warpack entry carries the WAR DOGS restriction and its Houndpack Lance entry carries no tag sentence.

That looks like a second vote for the pack, and it is not. For this faction the mirror records Munitorum Field Manual v1.2 against the official v1.3, so it cannot yet reflect the removal. It is reproducing the older position rather than adjudicating between the two. We record its pack stamp and its points stamp separately for exactly this reason.

A note on how we established which detachment carries the tag at all, because the naive reading gets it wrong. In a plain text extraction of the pack, the line UNIQUE: WAR DOGS appears at the end of the Bastions of Tyranny page's text, immediately before the HUNTING WARPACK heading, which invites attaching it to Bastions of Tyranny. A coordinate-aware extraction shows the banner sits at y=132 on PDF page 3, above the HUNTING WARPACK heading at y=146 on the same page. Banners sit above the heading they belong to. Page 2, Bastions of Tyranny, has nothing at that position at all. Hunting Warpack's own rule then confirms it in words.

So Bastions of Tyranny carries no tag, and any list you read that says otherwise has followed the reading order rather than the page.

Why the trap is well disguised

Three things make this the natural mistake rather than an obscure one.

The arithmetic is perfect. 1 plus 2 is 3, exactly a Strike Force budget, with nothing wasted.

The two detachments are genuinely complementary. Hunting Warpack gives you spotting and two enhancements for specific War Dog variants. Houndpack Lance gives every War Dog [SUSTAINED HITS 1] against a marked target, makes them Battleline, and turns three of them into Characters who can carry enhancements. One improves individual War Dogs; the other restructures the army around them. They read like halves of one design.

The disagreement is invisible unless you read both documents. A player who reads only the pack concludes the pairing is illegal. A player who reads only the Munitorum Field Manual concludes it is fine. Neither is being careless.

What to build instead, and the shape that is safe either way

If you want certainty, build the three cheap detachments. Bastions of Tyranny plus Hunting Warpack plus Iconoclast Fiefdom is 1 plus 1 plus 1 equals 3 Detachment Points and is legal whichever way the conflict resolves, because only one of the three carries the contested tag and no two of them share one. Carrying a tag is not the same as sharing one. That shape has its own page.

If you want a War Dog core specifically, take [Houndpack Lance](/40k/armies/chaos-knights/detachments/houndpack-lance) (2 DP) and spend the last point on [Iconoclast Fiefdom](/40k/armies/chaos-knights/detachments/iconoclast-fiefdom) (1 DP). Houndpack Lance already forces three or more War Dog units into your list, and Iconoclast Fiefdom's 500 point DAMNED allowance gives you something that can stand still and score. Iconoclast Fiefdom carries no tag, so nothing about this is in doubt.

If you want the cheaper War Dog detachment, take [Hunting Warpack](/40k/armies/chaos-knights/detachments/hunting-warpack) (1 DP) and spend the remaining 2 DP on [Helhunt Lance](/40k/armies/chaos-knights/detachments/helhunt-lance), which needs War Dog models on the table anyway and carries no tag.

And if you are going to a tournament, ask the organiser rather than guessing, and check the Warhammer 40,000 app on the day. This is exactly the kind of question a tournament FAQ settles locally.

Common questions

So is the pairing legal or not?

We do not know, and we would rather say so than pick a side. The Faction Pack version 1.2 prints the WAR DOGS tag on Hunting Warpack along with a restriction sentence. The Munitorum Field Manual version 1.3 shows no active tag on either detachment and annotates both UNIQUE TAG REMOVED. Two official documents disagree. Confirm in the Warhammer 40,000 app, and ask your tournament organiser if one is involved.

Why not just follow the newer document?

Because the programme rule for this class of disagreement is to assert the tag and not assert the restriction, which is the reading that is safe in both directions. Following the newer document alone would mean telling you a pairing is legal when a current Games Workshop PDF prints a sentence saying it is not. Telling you it is illegal would mean ignoring the newer official document. Neither is honest, so we describe the disagreement instead.

Does the tag question affect any other pairing?

No. No other Chaos Knights detachment carries any tag under either document, so every other combination that fits a 3 Detachment Point budget is unambiguously legal. That includes Hunting Warpack with Iconoclast Fiefdom or Helhunt Lance, and Houndpack Lance with Iconoclast Fiefdom.

Does the Imperial Knights guide say the same thing about its tag?

No, and that is deliberate. The Imperial Knights have the same geometry, two detachments sharing a tag at 1 and 2 Detachment Points, but there the two official documents agree, so we state plainly that the pairing is illegal. Same shape, different evidence, different answer. Do not carry one faction's confidence across to the other.
