Dread Talons (2 DP) + Murdertalon Raiders (1 DP)

It exists partly as a warning. The obvious version of this list is Nightmare Hunt + Murdertalon Raiders, which is also 2 + 1 DP and is illegal, because both carry the NIGHTMARE Unique Tag.

This is SprueSentry strategy commentary, not official rules. The DP system is new, so confirm the army-building specifics against the current Core Rules, the Chaos Space Marines Faction Pack v1.2 and the Warhammer 40,000 app before a tournament.

Why this pairing works

Murdertalon Raiders' weakness is that it cannot start its own engine. Its rule, Prey on the Weak, pays your Heretic Astartes Infantry Fly units only against enemies that are battle-shocked or at or below half-strength: re-roll Hit rolls of 1 against them, and -1 to be hit by them. On turn one, nothing on the board is either. The detachment ships with exactly one trigger of its own, the Warp-twisted Terrors stratagem, and that is Warp Talons only and costs a command point each time.

Dread Talons supplies the missing state for 2 DP. Terror Descends forces a Battle-shock test in your opponent's Command phase from any enemy unit below its Starting Strength within 12 inches of your Heretic Astartes units, and, more importantly, applies -1 to every Battle-shock test taken within 12 inches of your units, whatever caused it. That converts ordinary shooting damage into broken units on a schedule, rather than one stratagem at a time.

Once a unit is broken, both detachments pay you at once. Dread Talons' Pitiless Hunters re-rolls Hit and Wound rolls against it, Depthless Cruelty adds armour penetration, and Murdertalon's rule quietly makes that unit worse at shooting back at your fliers.

Conversely, Dread Talons on its own has no finisher. It breaks units and then needs something fast enough to reach them before they recover. Raptors and Warp Talons are that thing, and Murdertalon's Raking Pass lets a jump unit fall back out of a stalled fight and charge a broken unit in the same turn.

The tag rule you have to know

Chaos Space Marines have exactly one Unique Tag, NIGHTMARE, and it is carried by Murdertalon Raiders (1 DP) and Nightmare Hunt (2 DP). No two detachments in your army may share a Unique Tag, so those two can never be fielded together.

That is unusually easy to trip over, because 1 + 2 = 3 is exactly a 2,000-point budget, and Nightmare Hunt is the more powerful of the two fear detachments. Its rule has four clauses to Dread Talons' three, including +1 to Hit against Below Half-strength targets and +1 to Wound against battle-shocked ones, which would stack beautifully with jump packs. You cannot have it.

The evidence is unambiguous: Faction Pack v1.2 prints the UNIQUE: NIGHTMARE banner on the Murdertalon Raiders page and restates the restriction in the rule text itself; the Munitorum Field Manual lists the tag on both detachments; and Wahapedia's NIGHTMARE tooltip names the same two.

Dread Talons carries no tag at all, which is the entire reason this combo exists. You give up Nightmare Hunt's two extra offensive clauses and get a legal list.

How to play the pair

Spread cheap Heretic Astartes infantry across the midfield first. Terror Descends is measured from any Heretic Astartes unit, so three Legionaries squads placed wide cover far more board than one big brick, and every inch of that bubble is a permanent -1 to your opponent's Battle-shock tests.

Then shoot to thin, not to kill. A unit reduced below its Starting Strength is a Battle-shock test in your opponent's next Command phase; a unit reduced below half strength is already a Murdertalon target without any test at all. Finishing a unit outright wastes the mechanism.

Use the fliers as the second wave, not the first. Hold Raptors and Warp Talons back on turn one, let the aura and your shooting do their work, then commit into units that are already broken so both detachment rules are live on the same attack.

Command points are the constraint. Between them the two detachments have nine stratagems, and the good ones cluster: Pitiless Hunters and Depthless Cruelty both want the broken-unit turn, Warp-twisted Terrors and Bloody Example both manufacture tests, and Merciless Pursuit and Raking Pass both fire on movement. Pick one job per turn.

Enhancements: Warp-fuelled Thrusters (Dread Talons, 20 pts) and Shadowcowl Talisman (Murdertalon, 20 pts) are both Chaos Lord with Jump Pack only, so you cannot put them on the same model unless you field two such Lords. Most lists take the 5+ invulnerable save from Shadowcowl on the Lord that dives, and Eater of Dread on a rear character to bank command points off all the battle-shocked units you are creating.

When to run it (and the alternatives)

Run Dread Talons + Murdertalon Raiders when your collection has Raptors, Warp Talons and a Chaos Lord with Jump Pack, plus enough cheap infantry to spread an aura, and you want an attrition list that gets stronger every turn rather than an alpha strike.

Alternatives for the 1-DP slot on a Dread Talons core:

Dread Talons + Devotees of Destruction if you own Havocs or Obliterators. The gun line does the thinning that the aura converts into broken units, and it needs no jump packs at all.
Dread Talons + Cabal of Chaos if you own a Sorcerer. Fleshy Curse pushes units below Starting Strength at range, which is the exact trigger the Command-phase clause needs.

Or keep the fliers and change the core:

Deceptors + Murdertalon Raiders trades the fear aura for six infiltrating units that chip enemy squads down from turn one.
Renegade Warband + Murdertalon Raiders is the pairing to remember if you dislike Dark Pacts: Renegade Warband deletes the army rule, and Murdertalon Raiders is the only 1-DP detachment whose own rule never mentions it.

And remember the alternative shape entirely: a 3-DP detachment such as Pactbound Zealots or Huron's Marauders uses the whole budget and takes no support at all. Huron's Elite is a free army-wide +1 to Hit every Command phase, with no condition to set up, and that is the benchmark this combo is competing against.

Common questions

Is Dread Talons + Murdertalon Raiders a legal combination?

Yes, at 2,000 points. Dread Talons is 2 DP and Murdertalon Raiders is 1 DP, using the full 3-DP budget. Murdertalon Raiders carries the NIGHTMARE Unique Tag, but Dread Talons carries no tag at all, so the no-shared-tag rule is satisfied.

Why not pair Murdertalon Raiders with Nightmare Hunt instead?

Because it is illegal. Both carry the NIGHTMARE Unique Tag, and no two detachments in your army may share a tag. The Faction Pack states the restriction in the Murdertalon Raiders rule text, and the Munitorum Field Manual lists the tag on both. Dread Talons is the untagged detachment that does a similar job.

Why pair Dread Talons with Murdertalon Raiders?

Because Murdertalon Raiders only pays out against battle-shocked or half-strength enemies and has almost no way to create that state itself, while Dread Talons creates it on a schedule with a 12-inch aura that applies -1 to every Battle-shock test taken near your army. Dread Talons in turn has no fast unit to punish the units it breaks, and jump-pack infantry are exactly that.

Does this combo work at 1,000 points?

No. At 1,000 points you only have 2 DP, which Dread Talons uses on its own. This is a 2,000-point (3 DP) list. At 1,000 points you would run Dread Talons alone, or Murdertalon Raiders plus one other 1-DP detachment such as Devotees of Destruction or Cabal of Chaos.

What does Warp-twisted Terrors do in this pairing?

It is the Murdertalon Raiders stratagem that manufactures the condition both detachments want. When a Warp Talons unit ends a move, one visible enemy unit within 9 inches that is not a Monster or Vehicle makes a battle-shock roll with -1 to the roll, and Dread Talons' aura applies a further -1 if that enemy is within 12 inches of your Heretic Astartes units.
