In 11th edition you spend a Detachment Points (DP) budget rather than picking one detachment. The budget scales with game size: roughly 2 DP at 1,000 points (Incursion) and 3 DP at 2,000 points (Strike Force). The Munitorum Field Manual points at the Warhammer 40,000 app for exact figures.
The 2 DP allied detachment: bring Legions of Excess daemons up to a points cap, and give both halves [SUSTAINED HITS 1] for staying within 6 inches of each other.
The 3 DP whole-army detachment: pledge how many enemy units you will kill each round, and ramp army-wide bonuses up to Lethal Hits and Sustained Hits on every melee weapon.
The 2 DP detachment our previous coverage missed entirely: +1 Strength and +1 Armour Penetration for charging, six stratagems, and a discount rule that names Fulgrim.
The 1 DP Terminator detachment: +1 to charge rolls every time a Terminator unit is set up, and a stratagem that puts a squad back into reserves so you can do it again.
The recommended first 3 DP army: Terminators that charge with a bonus, hit with Lethal Hits or Sustained Hits, leave the table, and come back to do it again.
The 1 DP Battleline detachment: +1 Strength for Advancing or Falling Back, the faction's only Unique Tag, and the legal pairing almost everyone rules out.
The legal army almost everyone rules out: two detachments whose names both end in HOST, sharing a force disposition, with only one Unique Tag between them and nothing blocked.
The 2 DP speed detachment: re-roll Advance rolls army-wide, which in a faction that can shoot and charge after Advancing is a damage rule as much as a movement one.
The 2 DP melee detachment: any unit that charged picks [LETHAL HITS] or [SUSTAINED HITS 1] after seeing what it is fighting, with no keyword restriction at all.
The 2 DP mechanised detachment: re-roll hit and wound rolls of 1 for anything that is a transport or disembarked from one, with the widest transport toolkit in the faction.
The 2 DP character detachment: a Favoured Champions title that moves to whichever of your leaders kills first each turn, rewarding several characters rather than one.
The 1 DP duelist detachment: Flawless Blades units have Fights First, full stop, plus the cheapest answers in the faction to screens and overwatch.
The most cohesive 3 DP army in the faction: Flawless Blades with Fights First, +1 Strength and +1 Armour Penetration on the charge, and an enhancement written for exactly that unit.
