Mortisan Council is widely regarded as the default Ossiarch Bonereapers formation because nearly every list fields at least one Mortisan. It is reported to improve your infantry Wizards' casting. Confirm the exact bonus and any conditions in your current Battletome, as wording can change with errata.

What the formation does

Boosts your Ossiarch Bonereapers infantry Wizards/Mortisans, reported as +1 to casting rolls. That makes your spells more reliable and your Mortisan support more consistent across the game. Verify the precise effect against your Battletome.

Who it suits

Players who want a low-commitment, broadly useful formation, and any list leaning on Mortisan casters for buffs, healing, or utility. A strong first-time pick while you learn the army.

Key units

  • Mortisan Boneshaper, Soulmason, and Soulreaper (your casters)
  • Mortek Guard and elite constructs as the bodies the casters support
  • Any centrepiece Hero whose effects you want to land reliably

When to pick it

Choose it when your list has two or more Mortisans, or when you simply want the most universally applicable formation rather than a niche one. It is the safe default in a balanced, objective-holding build.

Common questions

Why is Mortisan Council considered the default?

Because most Bonereapers lists already include at least one Mortisan, so its casting buff almost always applies, unlike the more unit-specific formations.

Do I need lots of wizards to benefit?

No - even one or two Mortisans get value, but the more casters you run, the more the formation pays off. Check the current Battletome for exactly which models qualify.
