Which 40K box format should you buy?

Start with the job, not the brand fight

• ▸New to an army and want a fixed first force: usually a current Combat Patrol.
• ▸New to the game and want opposing forces or a teaching set: look at current starter sets.
• ▸Already collecting and hunting seasonal value: compare a Battleforce against the kits you still need.
• ▸Older Start Collecting, Boarding Patrol, or secondary-market bundles: buy for the models you want, not as current rules advice.

Combat Patrol

Combat Patrol is Games Workshop's fixed small-force format for Warhammer 40,000. Official rules are published separately and change over time. Sprue Sentry does not claim every Combat Patrol box on the secondary market is currently legal for matched play.

• ▸Compare the exact edition and box art before you treat two listings as the same kit.

Starter sets

Current Warhammer 40,000 starter sets were announced in the Big Summer Preview on 26 Jun 2026, with a Sunday Preview follow-up on 05 Jul 2026. Starter sets are teaching and launch products, not the same product class as a single-faction Combat Patrol.

• ▸Choose a starter when you want a shared entry point, terrain package, or opposing forces in one purchase.
• ▸Do not assume a launch mega-box from a prior edition is the current teaching set.
• ▸Open the specific box page for live offers rather than guessing street price from RRP.

Battleforce

Battleforces are larger seasonal bundles. They can be strong value when the included kits match what you still need. They are a poor default first buy when you only want a small first force or when the extras duplicate kits you already own.

• ▸Compare the Battleforce against the Combat Patrol plus the individual kits you would buy anyway.
• ▸Year and edition on the box matter; contents change between seasons.
• ▸If exact contents are not curated on Sprue Sentry, verify against the seller listing and packaging.

Legacy and secondary-market formats

Start Collecting boxes, Boarding Patrols, older launch boxes, and incomplete used lots can still be good model purchases. They are not automatically current format advice. Treat them as identity-matched kits with edition risk.

• ▸Match aliases and box art carefully; display names alone are not identity.
• ▸Do not use old format guides as proof of current edition legality.
• ▸Prefer sealed or fully inventoried used lots when contents are unverified.
