The Imperial Knights have three detachments that cost each, and taking all three is legal, cheap in Detachment Point terms and surprisingly complete. It is also the clearest answer to the question people arrive at this faction with, which is whether Knights are subject to the ordinary Detachment Points economy. They are, and this is what that looks like.

1 Detachment Point

Dominus Foebreakers (1 DP) plus Questor Forgepact (1 DP) plus Throne-bonded Outriders (1 DP) is 3 Detachment Points, exactly a Strike Force budget.

Why this is legal even though one detachment carries a tag

Throne-bonded Outriders carries the ARMIGERS Unique Tag, and its own rule says it cannot be taken with another ARMIGERS detachment.

Neither Dominus Foebreakers nor Questor Forgepact carries any tag at all. Carrying a tag is not the same as sharing one. The restriction bites when two detachments hold the same tag, and here only one detachment holds any.

That is worth stating because the over-correction is common: having read that Throne-bonded Outriders is restricted, players avoid combining it with anything. The only detachment it cannot be taken with is Spearhead-at-Arms, and that pairing has its own warning page.

What three detachments actually gives you

Three detachment rules, and they do not overlap.

Nine stratagems rather than three, which for an army with very few models is a meaningful widening of what a Command Point can do on any given turn.

Three enhancement lists, six enhancements in total: Archeotech Autoloaders 25, Blessed Plate 30, Magos Questoris 20, Knight of the Opus Machina 15, Gyro-optimised Actuators 15, Ancestral Overbleed 10. Enhancement points are dataslate-volatile.

Three force dispositions: PRIORITY ASSETS, DISRUPTION and RECONNAISSANCE.

How the three parts fit together on the table

This shape is not just three rules bolted together; each covers a hole the others leave.

Questor Forgepact supplies the bodies. A Knights army without allies is three or four models and cannot contest three objectives. Up to 500 points of Skitarii fixes that, and In the Shadow of Giants lets them Advance and still start actions, which is how secondaries get scored.

Dominus Foebreakers supplies the guns. A Knight Castellan or Valiant is the model most able to kill something across the table, and the detachment rule pays it for shooting at exactly the targets a screening opponent hides in terrain.

Throne-bonded Outriders supplies the mobility and the cheap scoring. Armigers push out, ignore cover while a Bondsman ability is on them, and can shoot and then start an action for a Command Point.

The healing loop stitches it together. Questor Forgepact's Sacristan Pledge heals D3 wounds to an Imperial Knights model within 3 inches of a Tech-Priest each Command phase, and Magos Questoris takes that to D3 plus 2. Given the pack's rewritten Damaged sections, which cost a wounded Knight 5 Objective Control and 1 to Hit rolls, keeping a Knight above its Damaged threshold is worth more than the raw wounds suggest.

The obvious weakness. Nothing here is durable. If your instinct is that a Knights army wants to survive rather than spread out, the 3 DP alternative is Freeblade Company, which buys Feel No Pain 6+ and a wound per turn on everything and nothing else at all.

Common questions

Is a three-detachment army really legal in 11th edition?

Yes, as far as every document we read is concerned. Detachment Points are a budget, and three detachments costing 1 DP each fit a roughly 3 DP Strike Force budget. Neither the Imperial Knights Faction Pack version 1.2 nor the Munitorum Field Manual version 1.3 prints any Knights-specific limit on the number of detachments. Confirm the exact budget for your points level in the Warhammer 40,000 app.

Does the ARMIGERS tag on Throne-bonded Outriders block this?

No. A Unique Tag stops you taking two detachments that share that tag. Dominus Foebreakers and Questor Forgepact carry no tag, so nothing is shared and nothing is blocked. The only detachment Throne-bonded Outriders cannot be taken with is Spearhead-at-Arms.

Can I run this at 1,000 points?

No. An Incursion budget is roughly 2 Detachment Points, so you could take two of the three. Questor Forgepact plus Throne-bonded Outriders is the pair that keeps both the bodies and the mobility; Questor Forgepact plus Dominus Foebreakers keeps the bodies and the guns.

Do I need Adeptus Mechanicus models to make this work?

Not strictly, but Questor Forgepact loses most of its value without them: the Mechanicus Allies clause is its headline, its Vengeance of the Machine Cult stratagem pays out only to ADEPTUS MECHANICUS units, and In the Shadow of Giants only targets them. If you have no Mechanicus models and no plan to get any, swap that point into a different detachment.
