The formation ability is Vengeance of Azyr, used once per turn at the end of any turn. Pick up to 3 friendly Saurus or Kroxigor units that are in combat. Each one makes a pile-in move, then rolls against an enemy it is fighting and inflicts a small amount of mortal damage on a successful roll.
The pile-in is the underrated half. An extra pile-in at the end of the turn lets a wide Saurus unit drag more models into range for the next combat phase, or wrap around a target so it cannot be cleanly disengaged from.
It resolves at the end of any turn, which means the units have to have survived the whole turn and still be in combat when it triggers. A unit that wiped its opponent is no longer in combat and gets nothing.
The upside of that timing is that it works at the end of your opponent's turn too, so a Saurus line that gets charged still gets its pile-in and its damage before the round ends.
Players running a Saurus and Kroxigor core who want to hold the middle of the board and grind. The mortal damage is small per activation but it is free, it happens twice a round, and it applies to three units at once.
Pick Sunclaw Starhost when your list has at least three Saurus or Kroxigor units that will realistically be in combat at the same time. Aggradon Lancers count as Saurus, so a cavalry-leaning list still qualifies. If your army is Skink or Monster led, one of the other Starhosts fits better.

No. It resolves at the end of any turn, so the units have to still be alive and still be in combat at that point. A unit that destroyed its opponent earlier in the turn is not eligible.
They are Saurus Cavalry, so they meet the Saurus condition. The ability asks for Saurus or Kroxigor units that are in combat, not specifically infantry.
