The oldest rivalry in Warhammer 40,000 β the Emperor's finest against the fallen legions. Both are elite power-armoured armies that play similarly at their core, so this choice is mostly about flavour and range. This guide breaks down the real differences.

The quick answer
- Pick Space Marines for the cleanest, best-supported elite army with the widest kit range, the most chapters to theme around, and the most tutorials and opponents.
- Pick Chaos Space Marines if you love the villain fantasy β corrupted Astartes, Marks of the Chaos Gods, and a darker aesthetic β and don't mind a slightly smaller support scene.
Mechanically they're cousins; pick the side of the war you want to paint.
Playstyle
Both are elite power-armoured forces β tough infantry, strong characters, flexible tools. Space Marines lean on Oath of Moment and a huge, specialised kit range. Chaos Space Marines bring Marks of Chaos (Khorne/Nurgle/Tzeentch/Slaanesh) and a more melee-and-menace flavour, plus access to daemon-engines and cultist chaff. Similar skeleton, different character.
Range and support
Space Marines have by far the largest model range in the game and the most community content β easiest to find tutorials, opponents, and cheap secondhand kits. Chaos Space Marines have a healthy but smaller range; if you want a specific god's aesthetic you may branch into a dedicated Chaos army (Death Guard, Thousand Sons, World Eaters) later.
Painting and cost
Both are elite (low model count), so both are manageable to paint β Chaos schemes are often more forgiving/grungy, loyalist chapters more crisp. Both start with a Combat Patrol at a comparable price; compare live prices on the box pages. Space Marines' larger secondhand supply can make them cheaper to expand.
So which one?
Want the hero fantasy, maximum support, and the biggest range β Space Marines. Want the villain fantasy and Chaos flavour β Chaos Space Marines (and consider whether one Chaos god's army calls to you more). If you're brand new and want the smoothest ramp, Space Marines' support edge is real.
Common questions
Are Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines the same to play?
They share the same elite power-armoured skeleton and play similarly at their core, but Chaos Space Marines add Marks of the Chaos Gods and a darker, more melee-forward flavour, while loyalists lean on Oath of Moment and a much larger kit range.
Which has more support, loyalists or Chaos?
Space Marines β they have the largest model range and the most tutorials, opponents, and secondhand kits in the game. Chaos Space Marines are well-supported but smaller.
Should a beginner pick Space Marines or Chaos?
Either works, but Space Marines' huge support scene makes them the smoothest first army. Choose Chaos if the villain aesthetic is what excites you β motivation to paint matters most.
