Genestealer Cults: Purestrain Broodswarm plus Biosanctic Broodsurge Is Illegal
The army the arithmetic invites and the rules forbid: two Genestealer-forward detachments that cost exactly your Strike Force budget and share the PURESTRAIN Unique Tag.

This page exists because of an army a lot of Genestealer Cults players will try to build, and because the reason they try is entirely reasonable.
[Purestrain Broodswarm](/40k/armies/genestealer-cults/detachments/purestrain-broodswarm) (1 DP) plus [Biosanctic Broodsurge](/40k/armies/genestealer-cults/detachments/biosanctic-broodsurge) (2 DP) is ILLEGAL.
It costs exactly the 3 DP Strike Force budget. Both detachments are built on Purestrain Genestealers. Both make them better at the thing they are for. And both carry the PURESTRAIN Unique Tag, and no two detachments in your army may share a Unique Tag.
What makes this worth a page rather than a footnote is that only one of the two names tells you. Purestrain Broodswarm says it. Biosanctic Broodsurge does not.
This is SprueSentry strategy commentary, not official rules. Written against the official Genestealer Cults Faction Pack version 1.1, legal for matched play from 22 July 2026, with Detachment Point costs, force dispositions, Unique Tags and enhancement points from the official Munitorum Field Manual version 1.3, read on 27 August 2026. Genestealer Cults were not part of the 26 August reissue, so the pack was five weeks old when this was written. Enhancement points are dataslate-volatile; the Warhammer 40,000 app is the final word.
Why the arithmetic invites exactly the wrong army
Work through the reasoning a player actually follows, because every step of it is sensible.
You want a Genestealer army. You look at the menu and find the two detachments that name Purestrain Genestealers in their rules. Purestrain Broodswarm at 1 DP lets unengaged broods leave the table and come back. Biosanctic Broodsurge at 2 DP gives them +1 to Charge rolls and +1 Attack on the turn they charge. One makes the brood repeatable and the other makes it lethal. They are obviously complementary.
Then you check the budget. One plus two is three. A Strike Force budget is three. It fits perfectly, with nothing left over and nothing wasted.
Everything about that reads like a designed pairing, and it is not one. Both detachments carry PURESTRAIN, and a Unique Tag stops you taking two detachments that share it.
The reason this catches careful players is the naming. Purestrain Broodswarm's own rules block says so in words: "This detachment has the PURESTRAIN tag and cannot be taken with another PURESTRAIN detachment." A player who reads that does the right thing and goes looking for another purestrain detachment. There is no detachment on the menu with the word purestrain in its name except the one they are already looking at. Biosanctic Broodsurge carries the tag with nothing in its name to say so, and the pack does not print its page at all, because it is a codex detachment the pack only amends.
So the search comes up empty, the pairing looks clear, and the army is illegal.
The Brood coincidence, which helps nobody
There is a second signal in this faction's names, and it is worth naming precisely because it is worthless.
Three detachments share the word Brood: Purestrain Broodswarm, Biosanctic Broodsurge and Brood Brothers Auxilia.
If that stem meant anything, it would sort them into a family. It does not. Look at what is actually true:
- Purestrain Broodswarm and Biosanctic Broodsurge are the illegal pair.
- Purestrain Broodswarm and Brood Brothers Auxilia are the pairing we recommend most, covered on its own page.
Same stem, opposite answers. Brood Brothers Auxilia carries no Unique Tag at all.
The same lesson runs through the other tag pair. Xenocult Masses carries HOSTS and has nothing in its name to say so, while Host of Ascension carries HOSTS and does. Across all four tagged detachments, the name tells you the truth exactly half the time, which is worse than useless, because it is confident and wrong as often as it is confident and right.
And the reverse mistake is just as available. Two detachments that both carry a tag are perfectly legal together if the tags differ. Purestrain Broodswarm plus Xenocult Masses is legal, costs 2 DP, and is ruled out by players who have correctly learned that this faction has tags and then drawn the wrong conclusion from it.
The rule to carry away: check the tag line, not the name.
What to build instead
If you want a Genestealer-forward army, you have to pick a lane. Both are good and they are genuinely different armies.
Take Purestrain Broodswarm (1 DP) and pair it with something that is not Biosanctic Broodsurge. Four of the five 2 DP detachments are available, and the strongest is [Brood Brothers Auxilia](/40k/armies/genestealer-cults/detachments/brood-brothers-auxilia), which supplies the ranged firepower the Cult otherwise lacks while your Genestealers stop an opponent walking at your gunline. [Final Day](/40k/armies/genestealer-cults/detachments/final-day) is the thematic choice and works better than it reads, because Psionic Parasitism explicitly cannot select Purestrain Genestealer or Patriarch units, so the units you care about are the ones it can never eat.
Or take Biosanctic Broodsurge (2 DP) and pair it with a 1 DP detachment that is not Purestrain Broodswarm. Xenocult Masses is the better of the two available, giving you a horde that holds ground behind a hammer that clears it; the tags differ, HOSTS against PURESTRAIN, so nothing is blocked. Heroes of the Uprising is the other option and carries no tag at all.
One more thing to note about which lane you pick. Biosanctic Broodsurge is built partly on Aberrants, and Aberrants are the most expensive unit in the faction to bring back with the army rule: 8 Resurgence points for ten models, against a Strike Force pool of 10. Purestrain Genestealers cost 6 for ten, and Neophyte Hybrids cost 3. If you are new to the army, the cheaper lane is more forgiving, because the army rule will actually be able to afford your mistakes.
Common questions
Can I take Purestrain Broodswarm and Biosanctic Broodsurge together?
No. Both carry the PURESTRAIN Unique Tag, and no two detachments in your army may share a Unique Tag. The pair costs exactly 3 Detachment Points, which is a full Strike Force budget, so the arithmetic fits perfectly and the rules still forbid it.
How would I know Biosanctic Broodsurge has the PURESTRAIN tag?
Not from its name, which is the whole problem. It is listed in the official Munitorum Field Manual v1.3, where the Genestealer Cults page prints a UNIQUE: PURESTRAIN band on the Biosanctic Broodsurge card, and the community rules mirror carries the same banner. Faction Pack v1.1 states the tag in words only for the two detachments it prints in full, Purestrain Broodswarm and Xenocult Masses, because Biosanctic Broodsurge is a codex detachment the pack only amends.
Does sharing the word Brood mean two detachments cannot be combined?
No, and it is worth being explicit because the coincidence is unhelpful. Three detachments share the stem: Purestrain Broodswarm, Biosanctic Broodsurge and Brood Brothers Auxilia. The first two are the illegal pair and the first and third are the pairing we recommend most, because Brood Brothers Auxilia carries no Unique Tag at all. Only a printed Unique Tag restricts pairing, and only when two detachments carry the same one.
What is the best Genestealer-forward army I can legally build?
Purestrain Broodswarm plus Brood Brothers Auxilia, for exactly 3 Detachment Points. Your Genestealers supply the melee threat and the recycling, and the imported Astra Militarum units supply the ranged firepower the faction otherwise lacks, with Integrated Tactics making anything your Guard shot easier for your Cult to hit. If you prefer the hammer lane instead, take Biosanctic Broodsurge with Xenocult Masses.
