In 11th edition you spend a Detachment Points (DP) budget rather than picking one detachment. The budget scales with game size: roughly 2 DP at 1,000 points (Incursion) and 3 DP at 2,000 points (Strike Force). The Munitorum Field Manual points at the Warhammer 40,000 app for exact figures, and we do not quote a figure for Onslaught because no first-party document we read states one.
The 2 DP melee hammer: Aberrants, Biophagus and Purestrain Genestealers get +1 to charge rolls and an extra melee attack each on the turn they charge.
The 2 DP allied-Guard detachment: import Astra Militarum units up to a points cap, and anything your Guard shot becomes easier for your Cult to hit.
The 2 DP Tyranid crossover: import Vanguard Invader organisms up to a points cap, then drain your own cultists to heal them. A real matched-play detachment, not a digital extra.
The 1 DP assassin detachment: four named characters gain the KILLER keyword and re-roll hit and wound rolls of 1, with no condition attached.
The 3 DP whole-army detachment: every Genestealer Cults unit arriving as Reinforcements gets Sustained Hits 1 and Ignores Cover, and the army rule is putting units into reserves all game.
The 2 DP mounted and vehicle detachment: +1 Objective Control on your bikes and trucks, and objectives held near Atalan Jackals stay yours until an opponent genuinely out-controls them.
The 1 DP hit-and-run detachment: unengaged Genestealer broods walk off the table into reserves at the end of your opponent's Fight phase, then come back and do it again.
The army the arithmetic invites and the rules forbid: two Genestealer-forward detachments that cost exactly your Strike Force budget and share the PURESTRAIN Unique Tag.
Our recommended first 3 DP army: Genestealers that recycle, Astra Militarum guns to fix the faction's one real weakness, and two names that share a word and share no restriction.
The legal army people rule out: two detachments that both carry a Unique Tag, combined perfectly legally, with a Detachment Point left over for the faction's only three-detachment list.
The 2 DP faith detachment: any hybrid squad a character is leading re-rolls Advance and Charge rolls, and a Magus, Primus or Acolyte Iconward leading one gets Feel No Pain 3+.
The 1 DP horde detachment: Neophyte Hybrids standing in terrain heal 3 wounds every Command phase, which on one-wound models means free models back, every turn.
The most cohesive 3 DP army in the faction: one detachment heals your hybrid hordes and hides them, the other makes them charge reliably and hands their leader Feel No Pain 3+.
