This is SprueSentry strategy commentary, not official rules. The detachment rule, stratagems and enhancements below were checked against the official Space Marines Faction Pack v1.2, legal for matched play from the 26 August 2026 balance update, and any points against Munitorum Field Manual v1.3. Points move with balance updates, so confirm the current values in the Warhammer 40,000 app before a game.
At the start of up to three Command phases, select one Combat Doctrine (Devastator, Tactical or Assault) that applies army-wide until your next Command phase. You cannot repeat a doctrine unless a Marneus Calgar model is on the battlefield.
1 CP. The unit's ranged weapons gain Ignores Cover, and improve Armour Penetration by 1 while the Devastator Doctrine is active.
1 CP. Melee weapons gain Lance, and improve Armour Penetration by 1 while the Assault Doctrine is active.
1 CP. An Infantry or Mounted unit makes a Normal move of D6 inches, or a flat 6 inches while the Tactical Doctrine is active.
1 CP. Switch one unit to a different Combat Doctrine, ignoring the army-wide selection.
1 CP. Subtract 1 from Wound rolls against the unit when the attack's Strength is at least its Toughness.
1 CP. Worsen the Armour Penetration of attacks against the unit by 1.
20 points. At the start of a Command phase, lock the bearer's unit into the Tactical Doctrine independently of the army-wide choice.
15 points. Add 1 to the Attacks and Strength of the bearer's melee weapons, or 2 to each under the Assault Doctrine.
25 points. The bearer's unit gains Sustained Hits 1 on ranged weapons, and re-rolls Advance rolls under the Devastator Doctrine.
20 points. The bearer has a 2+ Save and Feel No Pain 5+.

Blade of Ultramar is the Ultramarines take on the Combat Doctrines idea: a 3-Detachment-Point package that plays like a sharpened, chapter-locked Gladius Task Force. It reflects Warhammer 40,000 11th edition (launched June 2026).

At the start of up to three of your Command phases you select one Combat Doctrine, which stays active until your next Command phase and applies to every Adeptus Astartes unit in the army:
The Ultramarines twist is the repeat clause: you cannot select the same doctrine twice unless a Marneus Calgar model is on the battlefield. With Calgar, you can lean on your best doctrine across multiple turns instead of cycling through all three. That is a real list-building incentive rather than a flavour note, and it is the single biggest reason to build this detachment around him.
All six cost 1 CP, and three of them scale with whichever doctrine is live:
Take Blade of Ultramar when you play Ultramarines and want the Gladius style of play with sharper edges. Against Gladius Task Force, which is also 3 DP, the comparison is fairly clean: Gladius is unrestricted and every Chapter can field it; Blade of Ultramar is chapter-locked but its stratagems have doctrine-scaled upgrades built in and it offers Student of the Codex as a private, repeatable doctrine on one unit. If you own Calgar, the no-repeat exemption tips it further, because you can spend three Command phases in the doctrine your list actually wants.
The usual 3-DP caveat applies: it uses your entire budget at 2,000 points, so there is no 1-DP support detachment alongside it. If you would rather have two rules packages, take a 2-DP core such as Reclamation Force or Bastion Task Force and bolt on Librarius Conclave or Subversion Assets.
Sample gameplan: open in Devastator Doctrine, Advance your shooting units onto forward objectives, and cash in Exemplary Vigilance against anything hiding in cover. Switch to Assault Doctrine the turn your melee block commits, and stack Oath of Macragge with Courage and Honour! on the charge. Keep the Tactical Doctrine for a reactive turn, or skip it entirely by carrying Student of the Codex on the unit that needs it. Use Ultramarian Adaptivity when one unit needs a doctrine the army is not in, and hold Armour of Contempt and Tactical Foresight for the alpha strike.
3 DP. That is the full budget of a 2,000-point Strike Force game, so it cannot be paired with a 1-DP support detachment.

No, but he changes how it plays. Without him you cycle through the three doctrines once each; with him you can repeat one, so you can stay in the doctrine your list is actually built around. Student of the Codex and Ultramarian Adaptivity are the workarounds if you would rather not take him.
Both cost 3 DP and both run on Combat Doctrines. Gladius is unrestricted and any Chapter can take it. Blade of Ultramar is Ultramarines-flavoured, builds doctrine-scaled bonuses into its stratagems, and offers Student of the Codex, which locks one unit into the Tactical Doctrine independently of the army-wide choice.
