Scales of Vulcatrix is the monster battle formation for Fyreslayers in Age of Sigmar 4th edition, and the only one of the four that ignores your infantry entirely.

The formation ability is Ancient Bloodlines, and it is passive. Add 2 to the Health characteristic of friendly Magmadroth units.
There is no trigger, no range, no once-per-turn limit and nothing to remember. Every Magmadroth in the list is simply bigger for the whole game.
Magmadroths carry a Battle Damaged ability that weakens them once they have taken a set number of damage points. Extra Health does not move that threshold, but it does buy you more turns at full strength relative to the total pool, and it moves the beast out of range of being finished off by a single big activation.
It also stacks cleanly with the things Fyreslayers already do for their monsters: the Droth-helm artefact buffs Companion weapons nearby, the Wrath of Vulcatrix prayer suppresses Battle Damaged for a turn, and the Scourge of Aqshy Marks of Vulcatrix table adds a defensive or offensive upgrade on top.
Players who bought Magmadroths and want to run two or three of them. With one Magmadroth this formation is a small bonus on a single model, and one of the other three will do more for the rest of the list.
Pick Scales of Vulcatrix when Magmadroths are a real share of your points. It is the lowest-maintenance formation in the faction, which makes it a good choice when you would rather spend your attention on the Ur-gold Runes than on remembering a conditional buff.
It is passive: friendly Magmadroth units add 2 to their Health characteristic. There is no trigger, range or usage limit.
Rarely. It is a flat bonus on Magmadroths only, so with a single beast you are spending your one formation slot on one model while your infantry get nothing.
No. Battle Damaged triggers on damage points taken, so the threshold does not move. The extra Health buys survivability, not immunity. The Wrath of Vulcatrix prayer is the ability that suppresses Battle Damaged for a turn.
